The application is simple to use, and can monitor various different sensors within the Macbook Pro and adjust the speed of the fans according to whichever sensor you set up. This helps you to figure out the lower and upper thresholds for temperature should you need to. It’s similar to smcFanControl but provides a little temperature readout in the toolbar along with the speed of one of the fans. With that in mind, I run Macs Fan Control – a little app that sits in the toolbar and once set up you never have to worry about it again. I think it’s a whole lot cheaper to replace the mac fans every few years (which incidentally, I’ve never had to do) instead of replacing the logic board because the GPU has failed due to heating problems. This is on top of the fact that I’ve reapplied the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (which did make a pretty decent difference in itself). I tend to disagree, since I do a fair bit of gaming (see my previous posts regarding playing EvE Online under Parallels for example) and both my processor and GPU get ridiculously hot before the Macbook fans decide to speed up from their default. Many people believe that Apple know what they’re doing when it comes to keeping their MacBook’s at the right temperature. And Macs Fan Control is still in use on my MacBook Pro even today (although it’s a new machine and the idea of opening it up and applying thermal paste is less enticing on a new machine!)

I have no doubt it’s kept my Mac alive longer than it would’ve been without it.Ģ018 Edit: Although this review is some years old now, the author of Macs Fan Control has kept the software up to date and this review is still as valid as it was when it was originally written. It looks like CrystalIdea might be considering charging for this in the future – which I wouldn’t blame them for. Also, it’s worth noting that if you’re running Windows in BootCamp on your Mac CrystalIdea have got you covered there too with a version for Windows.

Usually, there are at least three fans in a PC: The intake or exhaust fan either at the back or front of the case, the heatsink fan, and the power supply fan which is almost always at the back of the PC where it expels hot air. If heat levels are higher than they should be, these sensors quickly pass the information to the fans so they can adjust their RPMs to compensate and avoid any long-term damage to the hardware. It does this by detecting the components’ temperature level using embedded sensors on the board. The motherboard controls the flow of temperature information to the fans, thus regulating their RPM. The function of these fans is sometimes not readily available to the user without the appropriate software.įans are vital components of any PC build, but they don’t run on their own. This airflow helps to keep the PC performing at optimal levels but, in some cases, it can cause the fans to accelerate to an extreme level. Excessive heat is not good for delicate hardware components, and so the fans increase their RPM to help expel hot air from the casing and replace it with cooler air. When running processes like this, the CPU, GPU, and various other components begin to generate excessive amounts of heat.
